- Blocked horse leg
- A piece on the horse’s first orthogonal step blocks both destinations in that direction.
- Blocked elephant eye
- An elephant cannot cross an occupied midpoint of its two-step diagonal.
- Cannon screen
- Exactly one intervening piece of either side is required for a cannon capture.
- Stalemate loss
- Having no legal move loses in xiangqi.
